The Snake Park situated in the Guindy National Park in the Raj Bhavan
Estate has a large collection of snakes and many other reptiles. One
of the prime spots for those who come for vacation in Chennai, the
Snake Park has more 31 species of Indian Snakes, all the three species
of Indian crocodiles, four species of exotic crocodiles, one Aldarba
tortoise, three species of Indian turtles/tortoise and five species of
lizards
Many species of reptiles including endangered species like the Indian
python (Python molurus) and the reticulated python (Python reticulants)
have been captively bred in the Snake Park. The offspring, surplus to
the Park's requirements, have been either released into the wild or
made available for exchange with other Zoos. A notable attraction here
is the aquarium for sea snakes and turtles.
Tourists during their Chennai vacation can also educate themselves
about the descriptions and habits of reptiles. Display boards have
been put up at strategic locations in the park giving valuable
information about these reptiles, in a reader - friendly style.
Information has also been furnished to dispel erroneous notions about
snakes and also giving scientific advice on treatment of snakebite.
A museum of preserved specimens of reptiles and amphibian's is an
